Capturing our attention thanks to her delicate voice that marries perfectly the almost mystic sounds, she delivered an impressive debut. In a place between Banks and James Blake, “Losing My Mind” tells the story about being in love and how crazy you feel about the person that entered your life. Her voice is mesmerizing and goes in pair with that feeling of falling for someone until our mind is ready to explode. We took sometime to discuss with Sølv about her inspirations, how “Losing My Mind” was born and what are her favorite tracks of the moment.
Highclouds: Can you introduce yourself for our readers?
I’m a 20 year old songwriter, singer and producer! Sølv is the Scandinavian word for Silver (I’m completely entranced by Scandinavia).
How would you describe your music?
I always find this question so hard because I don’t think it falls into one specific genre but I’d say ambient alternative pop with a dark edge.
When and how did you decide to start making music?
I’ve sung since I can remember but I started teaching myself guitar when I was 15 and then taught myself production software a couple of years later, that’s when I began to find my sound and fell in love with making darker more electronic sounding music.
What are your inspirations when you create a new song?
I take a lot of inspiration from my own experiences and what’s going on around me. But I’m also a hugely visual person so I get so inspired by imagery – I love writing songs based upon films and even photographs. Words also really inspire me, a couple of words can spark a whole song – I really love to paint pictures with my lyrics.
What do you think about the local musical background in your country and how do you inspire yourself in it?
British music is so diverse so it’s great coming from somewhere with so many different genres to immerse yourself in and inspire you. I love a lot of older Bands/artists like Talking Heads, Blondie, INXS, Bowie, Roxy Music etc… I’m really into 80s music too and it’s great how you can hear its influence in a lot of modern music these days.
What can you tell me about your track “Losing My Mind” and your upcoming EP?
“Losing My Mind” is about the insanity that comes hand in hand with being in love. I think the production in the song reflects that slight glimmer of madness too. It’s definitely the most soulful song on the EP. The Rest of the EP is pretty eclectic and reflects different parts of me.
What can we expect from you in the future?
Once all 4 tracks of the EP are out I’ll be releasing a corresponding zine designed by me filled with visuals, lyrics and photography which will be available as a free online download and as a limited edition hard copy. I’m also working on music for EP 2 and looking into my live set up for gigs.
Can you give us your favorite song right now?
Her EP “Black Ink” should be released very soon and we are going to keep you updated for sure. For now, you can follow the promising career of Sølv here on Facebook, Twitter, Soundcloud and Instagram.
