Josiah & The Bonnevilles have put out a handful of tracks compiled together in their new EP “Cold Blood”, but “Can You Hear It” really captured my attention. It’s a classic sound done right, but still has a distinctive untouchable quality that could only have come from one band.
The track opens with a setting familiar to the alt-rock setting: a couple seconds of a base guitar, followed up by an acoustic guitar that sets the tone for the entire tune. The piano that joins the melody invokes feelings of an old-style player piano, but with a more serious, melodic tone. The vocals have a unique quality to express an idea that is rather melancholy, but still leave you feeling mostly upbeat by the end of the song. Put all this together with some tasteful harmonica (not an easy instrument to truly master), and you have the workings of a masterpiece.
The acoustic-Americana band has been formed since 2008, but “Cold Blood” is what’s really getting them the attention they deserve. Originally from Morristown, Tennessee, the band packed it up and headed to the west coast, now residing in L.A. They’re currently working with the record label Vagrant, and for now it seems like it will stay that way.
Josiah & The Bonnevilles haven’t let their move out to the west coast pollute the sound and soul of their music.
I can’t wait to see what comes next from this three piece group – but for now, I think I’ll just play this on repeat a few more times.
