Back in 2013, Henrik The Artist was already haunting the underground clubs with some Scandinavian friends and producers. He was only 13 (really?) … Recently, there was a speed-up for the young artist. Indeed, Annie Mac picked up his track “On The Mood” last summer for her FMM section and since then, he is releasing music via the post-internet label Activia Benz. His “Friendship EP” was released on April 1st and as our young mate is not taking himself too seriously, the date seems to have been perfectly chosen.
Henrik The Artist was first releasing tracks via Ryan Hemsworth’s label Secret Songs. Now, with the squad Activia Benz, Henrik continues making progress by bringing club music a bit further into the future. You can label his tracks as EDM or not, but more importantly, don’t compare him to Guetta or Harris who sound like grandpas compared to his wacky style. Indeed, his music is a mix of PC Music, stadium-tailored trance, and nightcore à la NXC Mansion. There are also 80s and 90s vibes and it is probably why it sounds a bit mainstream or familiar. The EP, which seems to be dedicated to friendships, is as fun as a Spice Girls‘ record and yes, as they would have sung “friendship never ends!”.
Henrik The Artist is not taking himself seriously and yet, he has a lot to be(come) a trendsetter!
First, he is a member of Rytmeklubben, a Norwegian rising quartet of producers where he shares the stage with three other up and coming artists: Hi Tom, Torjus and Dj Karaoke. Playing both on the underground and mainstream scenes, his crazy world sounds like fun, fun, and fun! For a moment, we remind the good times as the young artist managed to make us forget that all the producers are not businessmen in 2016. He could have tried to sell himself as the next superstar but yet, he chose an ironic aesthetics to present himself as his Justin Bieber-inspired artwork demonstrates it.
The opening track, simply titled “Prologue”, is a one minute suggested promise, a hidden invitation to jump all around without featuring any drops The chords progression takes you straight away and stops at the right moment, just like an achieved appetizer before a party or a feast.
There is also this improbable techno-Zouk track “The Moment”, with DJ Karaoke. It is an upbeat and massive club gem where the drop brings you on a tropical trip, with your toes wide open, somewhere on a beach nearby Atari and Nintendo islands. The climax of the EP!
“Lose You” and “Miss Me” have a sad touch, as their respective title suggest it. Friendships are not always easy and sometimes, you have to deal with concession, disappointment, and nostalgia.
Though, as it happens during most of the feasts, you can easily get replete! The style of Henrik The Artist remains a niche and you don’t listen to this music all day long. We are curious to see the new directions he will take for his upcoming projects because club music is like fashion: ephemeral and transitory. We are tuned up to check the evolution of this young talented producer.
