If you are a loyal reader, you probably know that AM!R’s debut EP is a collection of singles that he released throughout the summer of 2016. The smooth sounds of “FUTUREPUNKSOUL EP” follow from the description instilled by the title, and leaves me wondering what this talented artist will cook up next.
HighClouds has been following AM!R for a while now, watching him grow in popularity as the year continues. His sound is somewhat like a mashup between Jai Paul and Stevie Wonder. It’s a layered production that takes a few playthroughs to fully appreciate. The NYC native has managed a fun and unique release that’s impressive through and through. AM!R described the release of “Dirty Whispers” as “a sweaty introspection of why my lover has gotten the best of me”. The dirty fun continues with the release of his full EP.
The “FUTUREPUNKSOUL EP” is a perfect conglomeration of indie rock, classic funk, and modern soul. The heavy electric guitar presence is a constant reminder of the strong funk rhythm that glues the EP together. The vocal style is a tribute to the best of 2016’s indie rock scene. The synth choice and lyrics, specifically of “Junky”, give rise to the emotion behind the punk-soul. AM!R never gets too messy with his stylistic crossovers, but still manages to instill his tracks with an edge I’ve been searching for without even knowing.
We were right to follow AM!R since the release of his debut single: his “FUTUREPUNKSOUL EP” is a conglomeration of styles that feels good every step of the way!
While well composed, the release isn’t just a collection of good beats – the message of the new EP is inspiring. In his track “Bones”, AM!R tells us he “loves his scars and all his broken bones”. There’s a message of loving life throughout, but not just the good stuff. It’s about learning to love everything about life and finding beauty even in those things that are traditionally shunned. It’s an appropriately edgy message, fitting of an equally edgy EP.
AM!R delivers an edgy and soul-filled release with his debut “FUTUREPUNKSOUL EP”. It’s a conglomeration of styles that feels good every step of the way. The only thing that disappointed me was that it’s not a full album – I can’t wait for more! Stream the full EP on Soundcloud and Spotify.
