Adrian Daniel is a person like you and me, the only difference being that he loves telling sonic stories and he never had another goal for which he has worked so hard and finally reach an achievement. Indeed, the artist from Brooklyn (NYC), that accepted to answer a few questions for us, just debuted his debut LP “Disillusions” 2 weeks ago via Billboard. The alt-soul and groovy project, that some people don’t hesitate to compare with The Weeknd or Frank Ocean‘s work, features 15 tracks and demonstrates, above all, his singing and songwriting skills.
The artist, who was first a dancer, explains how he finally decided to start a music career:
Being a dancer was something I did to stay out of trouble, it became an outlet for rage and depression but it wasn’t something I saw myself doing for a living. Music was just calling at me. Eventually it was my brother who pushed me to really give it a shot. I didn’t go into making music thinking I want to make alternative soul music, that’s just what came out of me focusing in on what i wanted to create musically.
My mother was the one who introduced me to music. She played everything in the house from Queen, Journey, James Brown, Sade, Stevie wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince. My music is definitely influenced by all of them. They are my musicals idols.
Indeed, when you listen to the funky and uplifting single “Pride”, it is impossible not to think of Stevie Wonder!
This album is a real pride for the artist as he is still working today with the same persons with who he started with. Everything was was made without any support coming from a super label, producer or manager. “Disillusions” is just the result of creative minds, pure will and determination!
As a storyteller, the creative process of Daniel often starts with the lyrics. As he wrote us:
90% of the time I start with the lyrics and then I sit with Rudy Carino who produces most of my work and we build the sonics around the story i’m telling. Other times it’s definitely a feeling i’m going for more than anything. I want the listener to be captivated emotionally and mentally when they hear my music. Like you’re watching a movie.
This emotion, you can particularly feel it in tracks such as “Fool” or “Devoted”.
In a close future, the artist would like to release videos for some of the tracks of the album. The storyteller wants to go further and give an imagery to his sonic universe. He also shared:
